RETHINK CHARTER COMMISSION MEETING TIMES

The good people elected to Dearborn’s Charter Commission need to rethink the start times of their meetings, particularly if they want feedback from the very people who put them in office.

Setting a start time for a meeting at 3:30 p.m. isn’t exactly user-friendly government.

This Tuesday, Jan. 17, that is exactly what will take place in the Mayor’s Conference Room. The 3:30 p.m. meeting will cover a review of chapters 5 and 6 of the City Charter.

  • Chapter 5: General Municipal Powers
  • Chapter 6: General Provisions Affecting Officers of The City

While I realize this 3:30 p.m. meeting is a special session, the standard 5:30 p.m. Commission start still is too early for most who may work outside the city.

If the Commission really wanted to hear from the public (that’s you and me), they would start their meetings at 6 p.m., following the more typical close of business. This would give all a chance to leave work and arrive at the meeting on time. For those retired fortunate ones, a 6 p.m. start would allow for a relaxing dinner with family before coming to Dearborn City Hall.
